NO FORMAL LECTURE TODAY (C. H. Séquin is that the EECS Graphics/HCI retreat)
USE THIS TIME SLOT AS A WORKSHOP WHERE YOU WORK IN TEAMS
ON THE DESIGN CHALLENGE SPECIFIED BELOW.
Students who have not yet created a viable QuickSlice .SML file for their bell designs,
should also use this time to talk to colleagues and get advice on how they might fix their problems.
Please, finalize your bell design for FDM
by Friday 4pm
and start reading the papers for Monday's Lecture.
Presenters:
Prepare for a presentation lasting about 20 minutes -- if there were no interruptions or questions.
Rest of Class: How to efficiently and effectively read a paper to prepare for in-class discussions:
- Read: "Introduction," "Conclusions;" look at Figures and read captions.
This should typically tell you WHAT the authors have done, and WHY. - Now try to find out HOW they did it:
Look for the appropriate sections that describe the key techniques. - Also try to get an understanding what the limitations and caveats are of the described approach.
Might there be things that the authors do NOT tell you ? - You can probably skip the section on "Previous Work" or just skim it.
- Write down a few of the key points you learned,
as well as some questions that are good for discussion in class.
Continuing Assignment#6 : Finalize your bell design for FDM:
Make sure you have a valid SML-file that can be built on the FDM without problems.
Due: Friday, 10/7/2011: 4 pm
