Notes:
For example, for semi-custom design, while the total number of semi-custom designs implemented in CMOS is predicted to grow, the percentage of gate-array designs is projected to fall. That is largely because the gate array implementation style no longer represents a good tradeoff for complex SOC designs. It is an example of an implementation fabric that is losing its value.
Each implementation fabric has an associated body of design, verification, and test technology that has been developed to support it over the years.
An important research challenge is to determine the circuit fabrics most appropriate to DSM technologies of 2010 and especially those which emphasize the particular objectives of military systems.
Such military-oriented implementation fabrics should emphasize reprogrammability, testability and predictability (in terms of performance, power, cost, and reliability) from a high-level design abstraction. They should also provide acceptable tradeoffs, in terms of power and performance in particular, for military applications. These requirements and this emphasis do not match any single existing commercial need that we could identify.
