CS252: Reading Assignment #8
Due Wednesday, February 22nd

For Wednesday, read the following three papers:
  1. The Predictability of Data Values, Yiannakis Sazeides and James E. Smith. Proceedings of International Symposium on Microarchitecture (MICRO-30), 1997
    Supplemental Readings:
  2. The Alpha 21264 Microprocessor, R.E. Kessler. IEEE Micro, pp 24-36, Vol 19, No. 2 (March 1999)
    Supplemental Readings:
  3. Complexity-effective superscalar processors, Subbarao Palacharla, Norman P. Jouppi and J. E. Smith. Proceedings of the 24th International Symposium on Computer  Architecture (ISCA). Denver, 1997
    Supplemental Reading:

You must also:

Turn in three paragraphs for Wednesday. For the first paragraph, summarize paper #1. For the second paragraph, summarize the architecture of the 21264 and detail (1) the different prediction mechanisms used by the 21264 and (2) detail how register renaming interacts with instruction scheduling. For the third paragraph, summarize the order of growth of delay and/or complexity for various components of a modern superscalar processor.
