I actually miss Flash, not because it was good, but because it was something you didn't have to install if you didn't want to see ads. Flash was a terrible program, but it was easily avoided. The push for its removal was really a push for a way to make it more difficult to avoid the ads. Flash made computers slow, so if you don't install it, your older computers can still work on the internet. The only reason to install flash was for games. Everything else was just ads. I remember the old Kongregate site that my kids used to play on. It would have about a dozen flash elements, with half being just ads. When all the elements were running, the older computers would slow to a crawl and be unusable. I installed the flashblock plugin and only enabled the 2 flash elements that allowed the game to play. Those ads were basically like malware. Ever since the removal of flash and the adoption of HTML5 and javascript, most people have no easy way of blocking it. I still have a plugin that block scripting and it's been quite useful to avoid ads and other junk better than just using an ablocker. I used an adblocker near the beginning, around the time they first came out. I didn't tell others about it because I let them get the ads to pay for the sites. Around 6-7 years ago, I started suggesting adblockers for users, because the malicious ad networks were finally becoming a major problem. In the pursuit of profits, all those advertising agencies have created an issue for the rest of us. They'd willingly accept malware and scamware ads just so they can get money. But now, people are getting sick of it. I only suggest Adblock Plus to users, becasue they're mostly non-technical and the don't block ads on most of the major "legitimate" sites. Adblocking has become a necessity for protecting users from Malware. Now, a lot of sites are detecting adblockers and blocking you if you block their ads. That's the real reason for removing flash. It was all, much, much easier to do before they switched away from Flash. You just don't install flash, or install the flashblock plugin. Now, there's all sorts of scripting bypasses and it's become more of a cat and mouse game. The push for the removal of Flash was really a way for them to embed ads in everytihng. Advertisers just suck and need to be fully regulated. |
