Land’s Experiment (by Justin Lee)

Believe it or not, these images contain only black, white and red! Your eye is being tricked into seeing other colors. Don’t believe me? Zoom in on a ‘green’ section and see for yourself...

How does it work?

The color that we perceive is influenced by the lighting that illuminates the scene. In these photos, the red background tricks us into thinking that a red light has been used to illuminate a multi-colored object.

Color constancy is a key feature of human visual perception, and it helps us to identify a consistent color for objects under varying lighting conditions. That’s why a green balloon still looks green under red light.
