On feb. 12, 1998, Tonya Hoover, U.C. Deputy Fire Marshal, met with the
safety committee to review procedures for an evacuation.

Among the things Tonya covered:

1) Everyone's first responsibility when a fire alarm sounds is to get
themselves out of the building safely, knocking on doors and reminding
occupants on your way out that they must evacuate. Close doors behind
you as you leave. All fire doors which close automatically keep
people from re-entering further into the building but will release to
allow exit through those doors.

2) Use "three strikes rule" in dealing with reluctant evacuees:
remind them to leave; inform them that it is required to leave; if
that fails, take down name, room number and report it to the Fire
Marshal's office.

3) There are rare occurrences of someone's being subject to seizures
from strobe lights flashing at irregular intervals. If this should
happen to anyone, get them into a room away from the strobe lights,
cover their eyes and try to prevent them from injuring themselves.

4) Any disabled persons who may not be able to leave the building
should stay inside a closed room and call 9-911 (or have someone else
call) to make sure that rescue personnel are aware of help needed.

5) Once we are out of the building, it is our responsibility to keep
people away from all entrances, encouraging them to gather in the
Emergency Assembly Area (volleyball court north of building) so as not
to obstruct rescue personnel and to keep anyone from re-entering the
building until cleared by the fire department.

We then did a partial walk-thru of the sixth and seventh floors to
locate fire extinguishers, exits, and alarm pulls.

Walkie-talkies were ordered and have arrived at Telecommunications.
Carl Woo will be delivering them soon and one will be distributed to
each floor and we will schedule a short training session. It was also
agreed that we should repeat the fire extinguisher training and invite
Treacy Malloy to give us her presentation on earthquake preparedness.

Please make the following changes on pages 1 and 2 of your BEP
(Building Emergency Plan):

Barbara Hightower is now in room 377.
Charlene and Tim Ryan are deleted from the lists and Kim Steele is
replacing Tim. Kim is in room 626, 2-9982.

all committee members have been arbitrarily assigned to an entrance door
once they are outdoors. You may want to jot these down on page 2:

F4 east (LeRoy entrance) - Steve Gribble and Barbara Hightower
F4 northeast (east end of terrace) - Taku Tokuyasu
F4 northwest (west end of terrace) - Richard Davis
F3 west (facing Etcheverry) - Anita Bailey and Gwen Lindsey
F3 northeast (north end of east corridor) - Kim Steele
F3 northwest (north end of west corridor) - Edouard Servan-Schreier
   	F2 Etcheverry 2nd floor - Carlo Sequin
	F1 Etcheverry 1st floor - Brian Harvey
(The latter two doors should be reached by first exiting Soda and then
approached through Etcheverry.)

Kate Riley will be stationed at the LeRoy entrance and I will be outside
the main 3rd floor entrance. One of us will go to a neighboring building
to call 9-911 to make sure that they got the alarm. On those doors
where more than one person is assigned, one of you might check to be
sure that other doors are covered once your assigned area is under
control.

The revised BEP is in the process of being entered on-line and I will
send out a general announcement when it is completed.

Please let me know if you have any additions or corrections.
