Part Description and Specifications for
"3D Web of Figure8-Knots"

Mutually interlocking figure-8 knots with lobes in tetrahedral directions.

Origin

This was inspired by earlier work on tiling space with knot-tiles. But here I wanted to make all the knots interlock with one another.

Usage

This part will serve as a geometrical test model for various fabrication processes and for efficient representations of the geometry of such irregular free-form parts. This experiment is part of a research program sponsored by NSF to streamline the process of rapid prototyping of free form parts, by defining a clean interface between designers and fabricators.

Fabrication Hints

The scale or strength of this model is not critical; it can be scaled so as to fit optimally a particular process or some remaining space in a run of a larger piece.

This part should be built with SLS or with some other technology where the support structure can be easily removed.

Part Description Files:

Berkeley UniGrafix description of 8 interlocking knots (nestT.ug).

Compressed ASCII .STL file: nestT.stl.gz (80kB)

Large compressed files can be downloaded from our anonymous FTP site with:
ftp ftp.cs.berkeley.edu {login as "anonymous"; use your full e-mail address as password.}
Then change directory: cd ucb/projects/unigrafix/STL
Fetch desired files: get nestT.stl.gz
The nestT.stl.gz file can be uncompressed with gunzip.
