CS 285: SOLID MODELING, Fall 2011
Assignment #8: Getting an Idea into the Computer
(to be done individually)
Background:
The first phase of a design project, where you need to get some
vague idea from your head into some visible or tangible format and then
into the computer to create a well-define model, is often the most
difficult one -- yet it often sets the stage for the whole design
process that follows. This assignment tries to give you a taste of that
first phase.
The "Idea":

Here is a picture of a cube-dissection puzzle. I think it is neat. I would like to have one like it, -- but at a bigger scale!
And then I would like to make other ones of a similar nature ...
The Target:
I want to create .STL files for such puzzle parts where the unit cube is about 0.75 inches on the side.
The build process should be economical.
(Many layered manufacturing processes charge by the volume of the parts; so ideally, these shapes should not be solidly filled)
Your Assignment (#8 - Phase 1):
Address the following conceptual issues:
1) How would you get this particular puzzle design into the computer?
2) How would you reduce the actual "build-volume" while keeping the puzzle at the specified size?
3) How would you create other puzzles of this kind (a program, or an interactive user interface, or something else ...)?
Write a detailed plan addressing these points (about 0.5 to 1.0 pages).
E-mail me your thoughts before 2pm on Monday, Oct. 24, 2011.
