Burning Down Soda Hall
Burning Down Soda Hall
- Building Design Evaluation, in collaboration with NIST’s Building and Fire Research Laboratory
- Consolidated Model of Fire and Smoke Transport (CFAST)
- Accurate simulation of fire impact in buildings
- Real-time/realistic visualization of building conditions in a fire;Natural visual effects of flame and smoke
- Scientific visualization to “observe” concentrations of toxic compounds (e.g., carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide) in air, plus temperatures of the atmosphere, walls, and floor
- Improve fire safety by helping engineers and architects evaluate how well a building protects its occupants from fire
- Could also be used to train personnel in firefighting techniques and rescue operations by presenting them with situations too risky to duplicate in the real world
- Desire to distribute VE and simulation over multiple computers connected by high-latency, low-bandwidth networks while simulating and visualizing large buildings with hundreds of rooms
