- Metricom contact (March 1 technical briefing on-campus)
- Interested in collaboration, will send proposal and schedule follow-up meeting
- Impediment to network build out is City of Berkeley -- have offered to help
- Digital contact: Dave Oran (Mobile software group)
- Mobile desktop/middleware software
- Reconcile-oriented file system, connection sensitive mail app, etc.
- Possible follow-up contacts at DEC SRC
- Hughes Satellite Division
- Direct Broadcast Satellite (VSAT for the 90's)
- (Very) high bandwidth downlink, (very) high latency
- Possible use of asymmetric access techniques (shared high bandwidth downlink, individual lower bandwidth uplink)

- 50 mbps IR downlink, developing 10 mbps system for InfoPad
- 5 m limit for the high speed stuff, looking at even faster link speeds
- Direct IR will be ubiquitous, 1 mbps, 4 mbps, 10 mbps speeds available
- Handoff, spectrum re-use (time slot not frequency) is something of a problem
- IR would have difficulty filling Soda Hall Atrium spaces

Discussion of Security/Authentication Papers

- Methods for fast authentication in overlays:
- What is the node's name?
- What is the registration procedure?
- How to avoid reauthenticating back to the home systems?
Dealing with mutually distrusting service providers
- Limiting the amount of subscriber information exchanged across administrative domains?
- Application may give up privacy to gain performance
