Conceptual Layered Architecture

--

The figure provides an initial layered architecture for wireless overlay network integration and application support. It also illustrates the range of software functionality that needs to be developed. The architecture is based on "layers" for Overlay Network Management, Session Management, Data Type Specific Data Transmission, Applications Support Services, and Mobile Multimedia Applications, although high level functions may require hooks into lower layers, violating a strictly layered architecture. In addition, quality of services needs will pass down the layers from applications towards the network management mayers, while information about network capabilities will propagate up the layers.
