Patterson Reunion July 20-27, 2002

The Fourth Day: Tuesday July 23

Before the Texans made breakfast for our fourth morning, five of us were off to surf lessons. As our instructor Dylan promised, there were waves. Swells that make little impact at high tide and turned into nice small waves at low tide, which is just what we wanted.

After instructions we walked down the stairs and into the surf. Brian was pushed into the first wave, where he was supposed to lay prone and ride it to shore for practice. Instead he immediately stood up and rode it all the way in. Brian, the Texas kids, and Uncle Dave all stood up and rode waves in, and by the end of the lesson each of us had caught waves on our own. Unbiased spectators (named Patterson) thought we five did better than the rest of the class.

After posing for our group picture, we told Dylan we'd be back at 6 AM the next day, this time with more of the Patterson clan.

Not having had enough of the water, after breakfast  most of the surfers and Uncle Don went to Sunny Cove to Bogey Board.

It was then time for family golf for eight Pattersons at Bolder Creek Golf Course, a better match to our skills. This time we didn't keep score to avoid making anyone feel funny, since many of us are at best occasional golfers.

It was a long day, and several teens went to bed before 9 PM!
