Why Won’t MIL-SOC Happen?
- Will run small lots for reasonable $$$
- But will not provide design services
- Will not build for military
- Most don’t have silicon IP
- If they do, it is proprietary
- Unwilling to build for military
- No standards, market fragmented
- High support cost, small, no leverage
- Bad reputation for quality today
- Use their IP as draw to fill fab and increase margins
- Don’t accept low-volume runs except for $$$
when excess capacity is available
Notes:
Listed above are some of the key reasons why each of these players is unlikely to fulfill the MIL-SOC mission. In today's competitive world, with very short time-to-market for commercial products, opportunity cost is perhaps the most important factor likely to keep these players from addressing military concerns.
