About as far from High Island as one can be and still be on the coast of Texas, South Padre Island lies within view of the Mexican border. In a one-acre plot, planted to provide food for spring migrants as they finish their transit of the western Gulf of Mexico, my son, Ned, and I watched bird after bird converge on a water feature. Occasionally there were a few other birders present, but we were alone with the birds most of the time.
