Wedge-tailed sheartwater near Christmas Island, Kiribati
In April we see large numbers of these birds in the channel between Maui and Molokai,
but always at great distances. They come ashore-- to their nesting areas, at dusk.
At sea, from a boat, one can get close-up views in broad daylight. The sea near Christmas Island
reminded me of the Klamath National Wildlife Refuge at the end of November-- birds filling the sky
in all directions, a birder's equivalent to the Serengeti Plain.
