For the same abstract, submitted in September, 1983(for the 1984 ARO mid-winter research
meeting), I presented these data on the distribution of linear transfer ratios (transducer
gains) that we had computed so far for 22 units from the bullfrog sacculus. To compute the gains
we used phase (cycle) histograms at very low stimulus levels, in which the sinusoidal modulation
of the instantaneous spike rate was nearly linear. Discrete Fourier transforms of those
histograms yielded estimates of the peak spike rate in the fundamental (linear) response.
We divided that by the corresponding peak stimulus amplitude to obtain an estimate of the
linear gain.
