Elegant Tern at Bolsa Chica

When I think of Elegant Terns or Heerman's Gulls, my mind quickly turns to a tiny dot in the Sea of Cortez-- Lew Walker's island, Isla Rasa. On a Stanford Alumni expedition to Isla San Pedro Martir and the Midriff Islands, I visited it in spring, 1978. This was nearly seven years after Walker's death. The rookeries he had described in his 1951 article were once again teeming with terns and gulls.
