Common Tern at Bolsa Chica

In June, the tern rookeries at Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve (Huntington Beach, CA) are fully occupied. But this bird undoubtedly has dropped by just for a visit-- on its way to the Common-tern breeding grounds far to the north. In addition to the birds shown here, Least Terns occasionally were seen-- bouncing along with their amazingly buoyant flight. That's a total of six tern species plus the Black Skimmer-- in one day, at one location.
