Nose out of joint

Three doors from us on Blacktail Beach, Mary and Dick Vail set out feeders that attract swarms of calliopes and a few rufous and black-chinned hummingbirds. This fellow was guarding one of the feeders, trying to keep the pesky little calliopes away. It proved to be impossible, perhaps explaining his beak being out of joint. A small hummingbird can be covered by a very large number of pixels, yielding very high resolution in digital photographs. The original image has 10 pixels per millimeter of bird. This website version was resampled down to approximately 3 pixels per millimeter of bird.
