Time: 4pm Tuesday, March 6th Place: 202 South Hall Understanding Design Representations: What Do All Those Lines and Boxes Do For Us, Anyway? Harry J. Saddler, Director of Technology, MetaDesign Designing user interfaces -- or anything, for that matter -- involves the creation of representations: diagrams, schematics, maps, storyboards, scenarios, layouts, prototypes, specifications, conversations, and on and on. There's no doubt that representations are essential to design: we cannot not represent. But what do design representations represent? What do we intend them to say, and what do they really say? In this talk, I will demonstrate and discuss a wide variety of design representations, and propose the beginnings of a framework to help us select, create, and use them well in our design work. BIO Harry Saddler is a Principal and Director of Technology at MetaDesign San Francisco. Prior to MetaDesign, he designed systems to support social awareness and interaction at Xerox PARC and Apple's Advanced Technology Group, and has been building user interfaces and interactive software for 25 years.
