Access to Opportunity

The Berkeley EECS Department has a unique and long-standing commitment to diversity. EECS faculty have initiated and actively championed programs which attract and support a diverse population of students. Beatiz Lopez-Flores, Director of Diversity for the College of Engineering, is in charge of recruitment. Our Department's Academic Coordinator, Dr. Sheila Humphreys works on recruitment and retention in the EECS Department and is happy to answer your questions. Dr. Sheila Humphreys' email is: humphrys@eecs. Please add .berkeley.edu to any incomplete email address.

Berkeley Graduates Minority Faculty!

Professor Anthony Joseph joined the EECS faculty from M.I.T. in January, 1998 and specializes in the area of mobile computing. We are proud of our success in graduating outstanding students at both the Master's and Ph. D. levels. Recent graduates of Berkeley's EECS Program who are now faculty include:

SUPERB, a Berkeley Summer Research Program!

Professor Jitendra Malik directs SUPERB (Summer Undergraduate Program in Engineering Research at Berkeley), a summer research program for undergraduates from around the country.

The Berkeley Edge Program

The Berkeley Edge is a newly established recruitment, retention and advancement program for traditionally underrepresented minority graduate students in science, mathematics and engineering. The Berkeley Edge goal is to identify, recruit, retain, and assist in advancing talented minority students to the professoriate. Interested candidates are invited to campus each fall for a conference.

Current Women Faculty in EECS

Six outstanding women faculty teach and conduct research in EECS (five in EE and three in CS):

Berkeley Graduates Women!

EECS women alumnae graduates in academia and industry.

Berkeley Minority Graduate Students in Industry!

  • Dr. Francesca Barrientos, NASA Ames
  • Dr. John Davis, IBM Yorktown Research
  • Dr. Sandra Ellis, Flynn Resource Consultants
  • Dr. Kris Hildrum, IBM Yorktown Research
  • Dr. Adrian Isles, Averant
  • Dr. Anna Ison, Xamplify, Inc
  • Dr. Colin Parris, IBM, Yorktown
  • Dr. Johnathan Reason, IBM Research, Yorktown

Berkeley Graduates Speak at Colloquium

Many Berkeley Ph.D. Graduates come back to give lectures.

Berkeley Has Strong Student Organizations!

Unique student organizations strengthen our engineering community and play a critical role in bringing students of color together for social and academic events and in making the Berkeley experience a positive one.

BGESS (Black Graduate Engineering and Science Students

BGESS with over 30 members, is headed by Nerayo Teclemariam, a graduate student in Chemical Engineering. Since 1997, BGESS members have coordinated Science Fairs at McClymonds and Oakland Technical High Schools. BGESS sponsors distinguished speakers for the science and engineering community as well as graduate students campus-wide: Professor Andrew Alleyne, University of Illinois, Professor Gary May, Georgia Institute of Technology, Dr. Sandra Johnson Baylor, IBM Watson Research Center, Dr. Wade Kornegay, Dr. Colin Parris, and Professor Valerie Taylor. The Future Black Faculty Database has been developed by BGESS to promote the university appointments of outstanding scholars.

LAGSES (Latino Association of Graduate Students in Engineering and Science

LAGSES, provides a cohesive group for incoming and continuing Latino graduate students.

WICSE (Women in Computer Science and Engineering)

Berkeley's EECS Department is committed to providing a supportive environment for all undergraduate and graduate students. We have an active recruitment and retention program for women. See a Summary of Programs for Graduate Women in EECS.

WICSE, the oldest continuous graduate women students group in electrical engineering and computer science nationwide, celebrated its 20th anniversary on November 14, 1997. All women graduate students are members. The core activity is a weekly lunch at which students meet informally to talk or to listen to a guest speaker.
