Exams for Math 16a - Analytic Geometry and Calculus - Fall 2008

  • Rules for taking exams
  • Exams are closed book, closed notes, closed calculator, closed phone, closed computer, closed network, and open brain.
  • The cover page of the exam includes these rules, as well as four lines of information to fill in: your name, your TA's name, the name of the neighbor sitting to your left, and the name of the neighbor sitting to your right ("wall" or "steps" may be the right answer for one of these). You get 1 point for each line filled in. You should talk to your neighbors and fill in this information, and wait until we tell you to turn the page and start the exam, so that everyone starts at the same time.
  • All other questions are worth the number of points shown. You may only use techniques in the book through the end of the material covered (section 1.6 for Midterm 1). For full (or partial) credit you need to show your work. You may of course check your answers using any other facts you know.
  • Write all your answers on the exam itself; you do not need a blue book. If you need scratch paper, ask us for it, write your name on each sheet, and attach it when you turn it in (we have a stapler).
  • At the end of the exam, you must line up and turn in your exam personally to your TA. Have your photo ID out so that the TA can look at it. You must have your photo ID in order to turn in your exam.
  • Midterm 1, in class on Sept 25 (review session Sept 23)
  • This exam will cover everything through the end of section 1.6.
  • You will write all your answers on the exam itself. You do not need to bring blue books.
  • The following sample exams are from earlier semesters and a different instructor, but cover similar material of comparable difficulty. Note: The "Newton Quotient Method" means computing a derivative from its definition as a limit.
