C79 - Homework 6 Due: Thursday March 7th, in class at 2:10pm. Homeworks must be turned in on paper (hard-copy), at the start of class. Late homeworks (i.e. submitted after 2:10pm) will NOT be accepted. Q1. Please find a real-life example that demonstrates the idea behind the chapters "The Sample with the Built-in Bias" from the text How to Lie with Statistics. In particular, do each of the following parts: a. Summarize the idea/error explained in this chapter of the book, using at most 3 sentences. b. Provide the permanent URL for one recent news article online (e.g., Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, San Jose Mercury News, International Herald Tribune, China Daily, Al Jazeera, DailyCal, CNN, Fox News, or other well known news providers) that provides an example of the error explained in this chapter. The news article must be from February 2013 or later. c. Quote/show the key passage/graph/figure/chart that you believe demonstrates the idea. This should be one paragraph or less, or just a graph, NOT the entire article. Either print out just this part and include it in your solution, or print out a copy of the entire article and circle this part. d. Using at most 4 sentences, explain why this part of the article demonstrates or serves as an example of the idea/error from the book. Q2. Do the same thing, but now for the chapter "The Little Figures That Are Not There". Q3. Do the same thing, but now for the chapter "The Gee-Whiz Graph".
