SCULPTURE MODELS ON EXHIBIT AT FERMI-LAB

The results of the collbaoration between Brent Collins and Carlo Séquin
is being featured in an exhibit at the Fermilab Art Gallery, Batavia, IL 60510.
The show titled "Artistic Intuition to Virtual Prototype: a Collaboration;
Brent Collins, sculptor, and Carlo Séquin, computer scientists,"
opened on May 13, 1998 and will run through July 1, 1998.

The show exhibits the interactive computer program developed by Séquin with which various constellations of toroidal rings and arches of saddle-chains can be investigated and optimized. It also displays images of virtual sculptures resulting from this program, machine generated Stereolithography sculpture models shown below, as well as the computer-generated print-outs of equally spaced slices through these sculptures, from which Collins then can construct large wood sculptures. The central feature of the show are the large geometrical sculptures that resulted from this collaboration and some more recent bronze sculptures by Brent Collins that are based on a different geometric generation principle.

"Hyperbolic Heptagon"
This form was conceived in the first telephone conversation between
Brent Collins and Carlo Séquin that started their collaboration.
Specifications: 7 stories, 2nd-order saddles, 90 degrees twist.
Realization: 11" diameter, Stereolithography (SLA);
courtesy Metalcast Engineering, San Leandro, CA.

"Minimal Saddle Trefoil"
Designed by Carlo Séquin with the goal to find the tightest configuration
by which a chain of 3 saddles could be closed into a toroidal ring.
Specifications: 3 stories, 2nd-order saddles, 270 degrees twist.
Realization: 6" diameter, Stereolithography (SLA);
courtesy Metalcast Engineering, San Leandro, CA.

"Monkey-Saddle Hexagon"
Designed in collaboration by Carlo Séquin and Brent Collins
as a model for a large wood sculpture.
Specifications: 6 stories, 3rd-order (monkey-)saddles, no twist.
Realization: 4" diameter, Selective Laser Sintering (SLS);
courtesy Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Texas at Austin.

"Heptoroid"
Designed in collaboration by Carlo Séquin and Brent Collins
as a model for a large wood sculpture.
Specifications: 7 stories, 4th-order saddles, 135 degrees twist.
Realization: 3" diameter, Selective Laser Sintering (SLS);
courtesy Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Texas at Austin.

"Monkey-Saddle Trefoil"
Designed by Carlo Séquin
as a possible model for a large wood sculpture.
Specifications: 3 stories, 3rd-order saddles, 180 degrees twist.
Realization: 3" diameter, Selective Laser Sintering (SLS);
courtesy Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Texas at Austin.

"Monkey Cinquefoil"
Designed by Carlo Séquin with the goal to find a pleasing configuration
of 5 monkey-saddles closed into a toroidal ring with a single edge.
Specifications: 5 stories, 3rd-order saddles, 60 degrees twist.
Realization: 7" diameter, Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM);
courtesy Malmberg Engineering, Livermore, CA.

"Woven Quad"
Designed by Carlo Séquin to demonstrate that structures are possible
that pass twice around the toroidal loop and interlock without intersection.
Specifications: 9 stories, 4th-order saddles, 45 degrees twist.
Realization: 5" diameter, Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM);
courtesy Stratasys Corporation, San Jose, CA.
