Bias Stressed PZT Actuator with Carbon Fiber version 1.0 (Sept. 21, 2002) version 1.1 (Oct. 01, 2002) recipe for (12+8)lx6w PZT unimorph 1. Prepare PZT o hand cut 14 mm x 70 mm piece from plate, choose < 130 um thickness pieces o bond PZT plate to glass slide using crystal bond (hotplate at #6) (use crystal bond on top as well to protect from abrasion during cutting) o add glass slide on top, offset lengthwise, so only one slide is in clamp. (top slide protects PZT during cutting). o mount slide in Accutom, wrapping 2 layers of masking tape on base of slide o cut 6 mm wide pieces using Accutom-50 (3000 rpm, 10 micron/second, 3 mm cut depth) (individual pieces of PZT+glass should fall off glass slide to prevent collision.) o use hotplate at #6 to slide PZT pieces off glass slide onto teflon sheet o gently remove from teflon sheet, place in beaker o rinse in a small glass beaker with a few cc of acetone to remove crystal bond, gently agitate by hand, repeat until crystal bond is removed o dry on paper towel, make sure all crystal bond is removed 2. Prepare Carbon Fiber o cut 24 mm width of carbon fiber sheet (30 micron) with knife o stack two layers, leave bottom layer on paper o cut strips 7 mm wide, with ~3 mm gap in between o cut 7x7 mm extension piece with knife 3. Assemble actuator o prepare mold with 20 cm diameter aluminum cylinder, wrap with teflon sheet o place carbon fiber on inner radius (extension) o place extension piece on top with fibers at right angles, press down with teflon sheet to hold in place o place piezo o set bottom mold on carrying plate o gently place top mold on piezo/carbon fiber o gently place weight on top o place carrying plate in vacuum oven at #5 for ~2 hours o gently remove weight, remove carrying plate from oven, let cool 4. Mount Actuator o check for shorts due to stray carbon fibers o use superglue to attach actuator to glass plate on piezo holder o attach ground wire to carbon fiber and drive lead to top electrode using conductive epoxy, cure for 1 hour at #5 in vacuum oven (carbon fiber is conductive and works as bottom electrode layer)
