The American Birding Association classifies this species as Rare (ABA code 3), meaning that it has been reported annually in the ABA area (the lower 48 U.S states, Canada and Alaska) but in very low numbers. Among the birds I've shown in this series, the only other with ABA code 3 designation is the Aplomado Falcon. The California Condor is designated code 6 (extinct in the wild-- meaning that the current wild population is not self sustaining). All of the other birds are code 1 or code 2-- i.e., not rare. Some may, however, be distributed only locally, or difficult to see where they do occur.
