The reading assignment for Wednesday for CS 258 is to read the following two papers:
  1. Baring it all to Software: Raw Machines, Elliot Waingold, Michael Taylor, Devabhaktuni Srikrishna, Vivek Sarkar, Walter Lee, Victor Lee, Jang Kim, Matthew Frank, Peter Finch, Rajeev Barua, Jonathan Babb, Saman Amarasinghe, and Anant Agarwal.  IEEE Computer, September 1997, pp. 86-93.
  2. The Impact of Communication Locality on Large-Scale Multiprocessor Performance.  Kirk Johnson.  Proceedings of the 19th Annual International Symposium on Computer Architecture, pages 392-402, May 1992.
Write one paragraph about each of these papers. You should briefly summarize the arguments, then  describe your opinions on and reactions to the issues introduced in the papers.
